Why is hardwood important?

One Cord of Hardwood = 26,000,000 BTU = about 185 gal. of fuel oil or 26,000 cu. ft of natural gas

One Cord of Pine/Juniper (softwood) = 18,000,000 BTU =  about 120 gal. of fuel oil or 18,000 cu. ft. of natural gas

City Light Firewood includes 70-90% hardwood in every cord.  Softwood (such as pine and juniper) is included since starting an all hardwood fire would be difficult.  We recommend starting your fires with softwood and then adding hardwood as the fire matures.

How much wood is in a cord and how do I know I will get a full cord?

A cord is 8 feet long, 4 feet high and 4 feet wide once stacked.  We have engineered a custom dump box on our trucks containing three, one cord bins and one half cord bin to ensure that our customers are never shorted wood.

What size is the wood?

Our wood is 15-17" long and it is split with a 4-7" radius.  Special order wood can be ordered for small stoves that is 12-14" long for a $20 processing fee.

Do I need to be home?

You do not need to be home to have wood delivered.  You can pay by credit card over the phone and instruct us where to drop the wood.  Be careful, in some areas wood is frequently stolen if it is not moved quickly.

Will your truck be able to put the wood where I want it?

Our delivery trucks are about the size of a garbage truck and need close to 25' of overhead clearance to raise the dump box.  Overhead power lines and branches can be a problem.  Please make sure you have adequate clearance or your wood will have to dropped on the street or the apron of your drive.  Our trucks cannot dump over fences or in garages or carports and cannot drive off pavement or over curbs.  We can bring a pick-up truck out to accommodate problem drive ways if you let us know it will be necessary when you place your delivery.

How much debris should I expect?

It is normal to have about a recycle bin worth of debris per cord of wood.  This results from the wood shedding it's bark as the wood seasons and from pieces that are too large to make it through our screen.  This debris makes excellent kindling and can be packaged in paper lunch sacks to start fires or simply set on the curb as yard debris.

What are your delivery boundaries?

Free delivery is available to the greater Portland area.  We will deliver as far North as Vancouver (South of the SR-500), as far West as Hillsboro, as far East as Corbett and as far South as Molalla.
